"Msosync.exe" is the Microsoft Office Document Cache (ODC) synchronizer and cache management program, introduced with Office 2010 to enhance interaction of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint with SharePoint Workspace (SPW), OneDrive for Business (ODFB), and other network and Web-based collaboration systems. It installs in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OfficeVV\msosync.exe", ("VV" being the version indicator of 14 for Office 2010, or higher). The registry subkey valueOfficeSyncProcess in HKCU\Software\MicrosoftWindows\CurrentVersion\Run causes it to start when Windows boots up. It has no visible window but obeys settings made in the Office Upload Center GUI. It keeps updated versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents from external servers readily available in local storage for ease of re-use. When an Office document cached by "msosync.exe" is in a SharePoint workspace or has come from OneDrive for Business, those have their own synchronization routines whose interaction with "msosync.exe" can cause severely elevated CPU consumption.
